Butoh Institute of the South

Method

Palermo • in-person • technical progression + operational imagery

The method is a practice device: gesture quality, work with weight, modulation of time, operational imagery (butoh-fu), and essential composition. Not “steps”, but states and transformations built with precision.

For access and details: WhatsApp / Email on the main Institute page.

Core pillars

The method is structured to develop presence and specificity: each element is trained, observed, repeated, and integrated.

1) Presence & tone

Availability of the body: grounding, center, micro-adjustments, breath, operational silence.

2) Weight & gravity

Transfers, controlled falling, suspension, friction. Weight as language.

3) Time & intensity

Sustained slowness, punctual accelerations, continuity. Precision without rigidity.

4) Operational imagery (Butoh-fu)

Images as quality commands (not narration): they generate states and transformations.

5) Essential composition

Short scores, variations, repetition. A readable and repeatable form.

6) Relation & gaze

Space, direction, distance, relational rhythm. Attention as a “field”.

If you want the full path: go to /en/institute.

Typical session structure

Preparation (10–15’)

  • grounding + targeted mobility
  • core activation
  • breath: rhythm and modulation

Technique (20–30’)

  • walking: weight, friction, direction
  • transitions: levels, stops, restarts
  • chains: qualities (full/empty, hard/soft)

Operational imagery (20–30’)

  • guided states (tasks)
  • constraints to generate specificity
  • repetitions with controlled variations

Composition (10–20’)

  • micro-score (1–3’)
  • choices: start/end, pauses, rhythm
  • essential feedback + iteration

Dates, times and location: /en/institute/calendar.

What you gain (observable outcomes)

  • stability and weight control (grounding, transfers, stops)
  • time management on stage (sustained slowness, clean accelerations)
  • gesture quality (density, continuity, intention)
  • imagery as a tool (not “interpretation”)
  • creation of repeatable micro-scores

Quick FAQ

Do I need previous experience?

No. The training is progressive: we start from technical basics and core qualities.

Is it more dance or theatre?

It is a performative training: body, time and composition. It can become scenic, but the practice is technical.
